How to Work Out at Home without Annoying Your Neighbors

Working out at home is a great way to save time and money all for better health, but sometimes it can cause tension between you and your neighbors. Here are the FizzUp trainer’s top seven tips to keep you on good terms with anyone living around you!

1 | GIVE YOUR NEIGHBORS A HEADS-UP

One of the best ways to avoid problems with your neighbors is just to let them know what you’ll be up to ahead of time. Tell your neighbors across the hall or the ones that live below you that you like to work out at home and that you might make some noise, but only occasionally at reasonable times of the day. Let them know that your workouts will only last 20 to 40 minutes, every other day.

If they sound interested in what you’re doing, you could even show them your FizzUp app. This is the perfect opportunity to create a common interest, make new friends and share your fitness experience.

2 | TRY TO ABSORB SHOCK

Now that you’ve warned your neighbors, you’re ready to start exercising with peace of mind. But before you do, make sure you do what you need to absorb shock and limit the noise you could make as much as possible while working out at home. The best way to do this is to use a thick exercise mat or an area rug. It’s more comfortable and works better to absorb shock, which significantly reduces the noise that might annoy your neighbors.

3 | WEAR THE RIGHT SHOES AND/OR SOCKS

Another trick to keep things quiet for your neighbors is to wear the right shoes and/or socks. Slip on decent workout shoes that are light, flexible and have good cushioning, or wear socks when you work out. These will help keep the sound of more dynamic exercises to a minimum. Buy workout socks that breathe well and are thick around the heel and toes and you’ll be ready to tackle your FizzUp workout.

4 | AVOID MAKING NOISE AT NIGHT

Noise is always better tolerated during the day. Try to do your FizzUp workouts anytime between 6 am and 8 pm. You’ll stay on good terms with your neighbors and feel ready to drift away to la-la land when it’s time for bed. Working out after 8 pm makes it hard to get to sleep.

5 | ACT LIKE A NINJA

Ninjas are discreet and know how to jump from rooftop to rooftop without making a single sound. If you want to work out at home without annoying your neighbors, you might need to do the same.

Take burpees, for instance. This full-body strength training exercise can make some noise. When you start a set of burpees, get into “ninja mode” and step up to the challenge of making as little noise as you can. This is a good reason to practice your landings. First land on the balls of your feet, then use control to lower your heels to the floor as gently as you can. Let “Ninjutsu” take over your body to guarantee your workouts won’t upset your neighbors.

6 | PLAY THE “EMPATHY” CARD

No matter how hard you try and how good your intentions are, you might still make some noise when you do squat jumps or other cardio exercises, so your neighbor could come upstairs to say something by banging on your door. When this happens, the best thing to do is to play the empathy card. Tell them that you only need 20 minutes to do your workout. If you’re making noise, it won’t be for long. Make sure they know that working out at home is the best way for you to stay fit, especially when the weather doesn’t make it easy to exercise outside. If your neighbor isn’t having it after you’ve honestly opened up to them, then why not ask them to come over to your place for a workout? 😉

7 | EXERCISE OUTSIDE TO KEEP THE PEACE

Working out at home is a simple solution to avoiding some everyday hassles. You can watch your favorite TV show while you break a sweat and the shower is right there. But if your neighbors have already let you know they’re not happy with the noise you’ve been making, you can try working out outside as soon as the weather gets nice enough to.

Why not go to the park, an outdoor gym or a vacant parking lot? There are so many places where you can do your workout out in the open. Getting some exercise out of the house can give you the highest level of “noise tolerance” from your neighbors. When it starts to rain, you can take your workout back inside without having to worry how they’ll react.

Now that spring has sprung, you’ll hopefully have more reasons to hit the mat outside than inside!
